Let me guess, you're here because a this annoying piece of text is occupying your computer screen?
"Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes.
Do not turn off your computer"
Because for what other reason would you search this essay up?
You want to get rid of this annoying situation? Well then, as Yunalesca from Final Fantasy X would say:
"let me be your liberator."
"let me be your liberator."
PS. This is for Windows 8 only.
The reason behind Windows update configuration failure is either because you have too many updates happening that your computer is unable to configure them all at the same time, or your antivirus is blocking something that makes it impossible for your computer to finish its process. Consequently, your computer either displays this message and then reverts back correctly, allowing you to access your homepage, or your computer keeps showing this text for the next 6 hours until it dies of exhaustion. If your computer is doing the latter, then it's because it's in a constant loop.
In order to solve the failure configuration, you need to access your homepage, turn off the antivirus program, and manually install the updates.
What to do if you're unable to access homepage:
- Power off the computer completely by pressing down the power button for a while until the computer "chokes" and dies.
- Turn the computer back on.
- Before any text shows up on the screen, quickly hold the shift button down (the arrow up button below CAPS LOCK) and press F8 on the keyboard repeatedly. You need to be reaaally quick when doing this! Repeated tries on this stage may be necessary if your computer doesn't bring you to the next step.
or, as some of my readers suggested. Hold the shift button + F8 button down before pushing the power button to turn on the computer.
or, if F8 does not work, try F9 instead as it worked for some people. You can try both and see which one works. - Then your computer will bring you to several options. Click on "TROUBLESHOOT"
- Then choose "REFRESH YOUR PC."
- Your computer should then bring you to your homepage.
If you don't have a system restore point, then you may have to reset your whole computer and choose "RESET YOUR PC" which will bring your laptop back to its initial stage, with everything (programs, files) deleted.
I'm not gonna teach you how to turn off your antivirus because that's stupid.
HOW TO MANUALLY INSTALL THE UPDATES.
Once you have accessed your homepage, swipe your mouse from the right corner and down, so you access the list of options. Click on SETTINGS and then on "CONTROL PANEL."
Click on "System and Security"
Click on "Check for updates" under "WINDOWS UPDATE." It'll lead you to this page:
Uncheck the box for NAME and check the individual updates below you want to install.
My suggestion to you is that you only install maximum 13 updates at a time. If you install too many and they crash, you'll end up with the same situation as in the beginning.
The installation of updates will take some time, ca. 15 minutes per 13 updates? You have to restart the computer after each installation finishes also, so it's a pretty time-consuming process. You don't have to install all the updates immediately, but you should do them as soon as possible in order to avoid your computer getting put in a loop when it automatically checks for and installs Windows updates again sometime in the future (ca. every 2 days).
Hope it helped. Have fun.
I tried holding the shift button and f8 multiple times but it just keeps coming back to the failure configuring page =\\\\\
ReplyDeleteYou may need to shift+f9 worked for me
Deletef9 did it for me too, think different models use different settings, perhaps :)
Deletewindows 8 does not acknowledge f8 without other parms being set. if you cannot boot your machine then none of the above will work. wish people would only answer when they knew the answer! "My machine will not turn on"....Then turn on and press F8. SOOOO stupid!!!
DeleteAre you suggesting that I shouldn't have written this essay then? What didn't work for you worked for others. Maybe you should contact your customer service.
Deleteif the friggin machine does not turn on its not stuck in a friggin boot loop numpty !!!!
DeleteThank you for this. When you have this problem and search there are approximately 1 billion results for every fix on earth except a good one..this is the only one that made any sense.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, you have to be super fast and hit the power button and immediately hit shift + F8 or it doesn't work.
Thank you!
You're very welcome and I'm glad it helped. I went through the same frustration myself when searching up for solutions so I thought I'd help fellow frustrated Win 8 users out there.
DeleteThank you so much for this!! I almost lost my damn mind trying to solve this problem. Now I can finally write my paper. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteGlad it worked for you. You're welcome!
DeleteFinally!!! Someone who knows what they are talking about! Thank you so much!!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I'm glad it helped.
DeleteI am doing that now and it still gets me back to the annoying screen. .My finger hurts so much now
ReplyDeleteSorry bud, you just gotta keep trying. The key is to find the correct timing, which is around the moment the pc turns on. It doesn't help to click many times quickly afterward if you miss the moment.
DeleteThanks BeyApple... I use my laptop for business and was New to Windows 8... you're always Windows 8 super hero... don't give up people... you do literally have to hold shift and press f8 repeatedly as you see light... thanks again BeyApple...
ReplyDeleteHahah never thought I would ever be called super hero when it comes to computers, but thank you!
DeleteThank you!! Clever, clever you are! Regards..;-)
ReplyDeleteThank you, and you're welcome! :)
DeleteThis worked great for me,Thank you for your help!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! :)
Deleteworked for me too, thanks! were right though had to be timed just right, took me several times and i feel muscles in my arms now i didnt know i had from pressing that f8 lol
ReplyDeleteHaha, it's quite a workout for both mind and fingers. And you're welcome!
DeleteIt didn't work for me pushing the shift key.....but worked first time when I pushed only the f8 key by itself.
ReplyDeleteYou only need to push the shift key once (and hold it in) while pressing the F8 key, but if you managed without the shift key, then that's great! The most important thing is that whatever you did worked lol
DeleteIf work for me after just pressing f8
ReplyDeleteOur home computer started doing this a couple of days ago. I had no idea what to do. Your instructions were a life saver.. Thanks! and God Bless!
ReplyDeleteIt worked for me too.. but for the toshiba satellite push the f4 key.this is how it works for me :) thank you for your help
ReplyDeletei did Everything you said and it worked but then i chosee only 3 updates and when its almost done it happened again.what should i do? :(
ReplyDeleteDid you remember to turn off your antivirus? Also, I would probably look at what updates to choose as well. Choose ones that don't seem "trivial" .. like if it's just add-ons for programs, then I'd choose these last. If it says things like "Windows," "program," etc. then they probably play a more vital role.
DeleteYou might also try installing from safe mode since that eliminates a bunch of unnecessary complications from other programs.
Deletehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/2809468
Why i cannot refresh it
ReplyDeleteI'm done restoring but it still take me back to the beginning when it configure my windows help ASAP
ReplyDeleteRestore as in system restore? And did you follow rest of the steps stated above or did you just let your computer install all of the updates again?
DeleteI can get to the troubleshooting menu. I have a lenovo. I push f8 repeatedly and all that comes up is it says diagnosing pc and then there is an option to refresh pc. I click refresh pc and then all it does is take me to the lenovo screen and I can't do anything. How else can you access the troubleshooting menu?
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know, there isn't any easy way to access the troubleshooting menu beside F8 trick and from within Windows. I'd suggest you try the Diagnose PC option and then see what happens.
DeleteThank you. This really helped.
ReplyDeleteVery helpful - thanks. All those who cant get to Trouble shooting menu, remember you have to hold shift key and repeatedly press F8. Also leave it switched off for a minute for so before restarting. Worked for me.
ReplyDeleteIf you're having trouble with the timing (as I did), insert your windows 8 disc, enter your boot priority menu, boot from CD and choose the refresh option that way. This worked for me.
ReplyDeleteHold down shift key and F8 key then turn on power. Goes straight to right screen
ReplyDeleteThank you, I added your suggestion to the essay. :)
DeleteThe easiest way to do this is if you put your figure on shift and f8 before turning on the computer, (keep a finger on shift and open the computer and quickly start clicking f8 while your other finger is still on shift.) :D
ReplyDeleteThank you, I added your suggestion to the essay. :)
DeleteFinally found someone that knows what their talking about! My computer sat for over 6 hours on this loop! Your a life saver thank you soo much for this! :-)
ReplyDeleteOmg !! Thank you thank you thank you. Uve just saved my night !! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this post. I tried the shift Fi and it seems to be working. It is people like you that make me believe that there is still good left in this world. Thank you again for your kind consideration.
ReplyDeletei did the f8 button thing and now its stuck on a please wait screen. :(
ReplyDeleteTry couple more times.
DeleteHow do I do this if my windows is a toshiba brand?
ReplyDeleteAs long as it's Windows 8 and you have a keyboard, it shouldn't matter what brand your computer is.
DeleteOh thank you it worked
DeleteSheer genius thank you sooooo! much
ReplyDeleteHi, can anyone help, I'm having the same problem, I've reset my computer but everytime I select just a few updates it starts installing nearly a hundred and then gets stuck. I did uncheck all of them apart from 5
ReplyDeleteHm. First of all, make sure you check updates that are important—not add-ons, not optional ones. Secondly, I'd check more than 5, maybe 10 to make sure the most important updates are updated at the same time.
DeleteOpen elevated cmd prompt
ReplyDeletenet stop wuauserv
open Windows Explorer. Delete everything inside of C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution
in cmd prompt
net start wuauserv
Try updates again
My windows is showing "insert your windows installation recovery media to continue" after following your instructions to troubleshoot, am sorry, I dnt knw how am gonna go abt dt.

ReplyDeleteThank You!!
ReplyDeleteThanks. Mine responded to this. Shift+f8 down before booting.
ReplyDeleteOf all the trillion advices this one actually worked.
Thanks again.

THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IM LITERALLY CRYING OF HAPPINESS. FINALLY!THANK U THANK U!!!
ReplyDeleteI restored my PC to earlier point and I was able to start it again. Later on I deleted specific update file and windows update works normally now. You can read it here in detail. failure configuring windows updates error solution
ReplyDeleteThank you for this!
ReplyDeleteI have samsung series 5 and i waited for a day and still wont work what to do?
ReplyDeleteK I am just now try the refresh your PC and it looks like its refreshing it already at 16%
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing this information. It worked for me. I had to press F2 and F11 and that eventually brought up the menu. I have an HP and F8 and F9 took me to a specialist HP menu. I'm extra grateful as I'm in the middle of job hunting and being without a computer is really not an option right now!
ReplyDeleteI will say though for other people like me who don't know that much about how the computer back systems work - "refresh" removes ALL the programs you loaded yourself. In my case that included Microsoft Office (Word, Excel etc.). I bought Office with my ex and he has the activation codes and CDs so I now have to spend several hundred dollars to buy a new copy and get back up and running. Obviously seeing as I couldn't use my computer at all I'm definitely not worse off. But on some of the the other posts I looked at people said their computers came right after 24 hours of looping. So if you have programs you can't replace it might be best to try leaving it for a long time before refreshing.
Very helpful - thanks. All those who cant get to Trouble shooting menu, remember you have to hold shift key and repeatedly press F8. Also leave it switched off for a minute for so before restarting. Worked for me. keep safe of windows file that will help you to safe your file in Window 8
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU!!! I LOVE YOU! You just saved me from having to pay to send it in!!! I LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU SO SO SO SO SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIts has to be very perfect timing. What I did was hold down the power button and when it shut all the way down I press the power button again. As soon as you press it say "one" and hold shift and continually press f8 and when I did that it bring up my Toshiba Leading innovation and it said please wait and then I stopped . it then bring me to trouble shoot and I refresh my PC and it showed me the percent and it says refreshing you Pc. Thanks for the help
ReplyDeleteI am working on an Asus x501A laptop. I simply push F9 (after the power button) as that is the key to bring up the Troubleshooting options on this model. Unfortunately after choosing the Key Board options, it went back to "Reverting changes...".
ReplyDeleteI tried it again waiting about 10 minutes on the Key Board window and then I was able to get to the troubleshooting and then the System Restore.
